Changing things up (a little) from the more electronically driven recent posts, but no less shimmery, here we have the new album from Slow Dancer, 'In A Mood,' released this Friday on ATO Records.
Vocally, Simon Okely has a touch of Arthur Russell to him, while the melodies bring to mind some of Paddy McAloon's most reflective moments. There's a fuzzy R&B tone that calls to mind Conan Mockasin, while the bass sound makes me think, first and foremost, of Metronomy. There's a certain air of their 2011 LP, 'The English Riviera', to this. Albeit with a more expansive Australian coast from which to draw inspiration. I don't mean to reference so heavily, just trying to paint a picture. How does the quote (attributed to many different people) go? "writing about music is like dancing about architecture..."
In A Mood is an expansive and ambitious LP, a record for road trips with no defined destination.
